Good to Know...
I doubt I will be doing any of the oil changes but have you done one yet? Is it easy or is there any pointers to share? |

Re: OEM filters on eBay | ||

I just used my free oil change from the dealer last week. From what I have been told by NF Sonata owners, changing it is really easy (all Lambdas 3.3 & 3.8 use the same filter). The filter is conviently located on top of the engine, but supposably requires a special tool to open. The NF guy that had done it said a strap wrench worked fine for him.
After about 1600 miles, I did an oil change myself without changing the filter. Now, with 4000 miles on it, I had the filter and oil changed last week. At 7000 miles, I think I am going to go full synthetic. Probably castrol syntec. I cannot decide between 5w20 or 5w30 though. I used the recommended 5w20 for my oil change, but when i asked the dealer what they used they said oh, 10w30 I think? The manual says the OEM filters are good for 7500 miles, but I think I will be doing good to go 5000 with the synthetic oil. I will probably send off a sample for analysis once I go synthetic and go from there as far as the interval goes. |

Every 4500 miles with a filter is ideal to keep that lamda engine humming along. Donot waste money on synthetic oils, it does not help much, its just a mental satisfaction process. Normal consumer vehicles on todays road really donot need that kind of oil, I can see if it was a fleet vehicle its cost effective. Just do regular maintenance religiously and you will have a vehicle that will be loyal to you. Doc, I test Hyundais for a living and I have always used standard oils in them and I drive to abuse them to monitor failures, trust me I have not had an engine shred yet. BUT, I do change oil and filter at 4500 miles and have accrued in excess of 200K in the lamda, theta and beta engines. I DONOT use wrong plugs nor do I use non-oem parts. Thats being very honest here. YES, I have had some engines which shredded when they had 100 miles on them..........they were assembled bad, so there is always going to be a few that are brain-twisters thats the nature of the beast in this industry. I do commend you and all here who are serious in keeping their vehicles well maintained. Just don't go overboard spending money that has no return. Use that wisely on the kids and your family.
Sorry for the long reply So what was that again?

Whoohoo, they came today. They even came with the drain plug crush washers too. Now I have between 30K & 50K worth of oil filters on hand.
![]() Thanks for the info Equus. (We have spoken numerous times on the ElantraClub webboard also). I might just do what I did in the Elantra. I have run a synthetic blend from the 3rd oil change on. Synthetic blends are fairly inexpensive, and even though probably not necessary, it is the piece of mind factor here for me. I can get a couple of oil analysis's done between regular dino oil and either a blend or full synthetic to see how much quantifiable benefit there may or may not be. I love hard data. Guess it is just the scientist in me. Right now, I am leaning towards 5w30, also for piece of mind. |

I spoke to Ken Remick, service and parts manager for Northest NY, Hyundai, when he was at the dealership. I asked him what is the proper procedure to ensure changing the oil at home will not cause doubt at the dealership if there is a warranty issuse. Here is what he told me.
Use only Hyundai genuine parts. Go out and get yourself a three ring service or maintance pad at staple or officemax that a invoice number at the top of each page. Do your maintenance, fill out the event, parts and file. The receipt book adds legitimacy. Sounds ridiculous, but why take chances. QUESTION: What is the procedure for changing out the oil filter? |

Re: OEM filters on eBay | ||

I'm hoping Doc fills us in on that when he starts using that batch of filters. From what I remember reading from Azera and Sonata owners the new style filter is on the top of the engine near the firewall. Aparently you probably have to take the engine cover off to see it. I'm not quite to that point yet though.

Its not time for a filter change yet. The procedure is the same as with other cars. Open oil cap, undo drain plug and let the oil drain etc. Where the lambda series engines are different ( 3.3 & 3.8 ) is they use a cartridge style filter (other mfg do this as well). The filter housing is conviently located on top of the engine. Once you remove your engine cover, it should be there on the right with a black cap. If you look at the little buldge on the right side of the engine cover, it says oil filter on it.
Now, supposbaly, this takes a special tool to get it off, but guys on the Elantra boards that now drive NF Sonatas (with the 3.3) said they got it off with a strap wrench. There is an O ring included with the oil filter, and I guess I will just have to see where it goes when I do my first oil change here in about 1000 more miles. I will update when the time comes. |

I don't have my manual handy but I'm pretty sure it is laid out there.
Generally it says to drive at varying speeds without flooring it for the first couple of hundred miles. Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will enjoy your new ride. |

Hi,
I picked up my van in March and manual says to go easy for the first 2000km. Don't race at the lights or on the autoban untill you wait for that 2000 shows on your odo, do full oil change ( for peace of mind ) and go nuts Enjoy I like the van myself Tomcio |
